The Balloon Thing wishes all nurses in Singapore a Happy Nurses Day!
On the 1st August, Singapore will celebrate Nurses Day to commemorate all the hard working nurses. They are literally our white angels in hospital who are strong enough to tolerate everything and soft enough to understand everyone.
There are 4 things you might not know about Nurses Day in Singapore.
1) Date Of Celebration
It’s different from the other countries who celebrate it on 12 May – the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Interestingly, Singapore is the only country to celebrate Nurses Day on 1 August.
2) Why August the 1st?
“It is because up til 1885, healthcare in Singapore had been poor. While there were several hospitals available there was a lack of nurses to support the work of the doctors. A call for nurses was answered by nuns from the local French Convent, who started nursing at the General Hospital Aug 1, 1885”. Quote from Google
3) The Istana is opened on this day
Since 1990, the president has opened the Istana to nurses on Nurses Day, to thank them for their valuable contribution to the health and well-being of the nation.
4) President’s Award for Nurses
President S R Nathan introduced the President’s Award for Nurses on 1 August 2000. In fact, every year could see up to three nurses being awarded.
Balloon Ranger cliched a balloon decoration deal for Nurses Day event in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital last weekend and The Balloon Thing, alongside with Pixel Party assisted him in this balloon decoration and i must say teamwork makes a huge success! We set up as early as 8am to 11am for the decoration and make sure everything goes smoothly. Tiring but fulfilling i must say 🙂
Here’s a video for all the nurses!
